Is your mobile phone helping fund war in Congo?

24 Oct

We all love our phones, I cant imagine a day without my phone, But the production of phones has a dark and a bloody side, that most of us, dont know about.

Your mobile phone, your computer, your portable music player, and your gaming system all fuel fighting in eastern Congo Take Action Now »

The mobile phone in your pocket might be helping to fund armed militia groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that use rape and murder as weapons of war, the campaigners have been warned.

The main part of minerals used to produce cell phones are coming from the mines in the Eastern DR Congo. More than 80 per cent of the world’s coltan is in Africa, and 80 percent of that lies in territory controlled by Congo’s various ragtag rebel groups, armed militia and its corrupt and underfunded national army.

The Western World is buying these so-called conflict minerals and thereby finances a civil war that, according to human rights organisations, has been the bloodiest conflict since World War II: During the last 15 years the conflict has cost the lives of more than 5 million people and 300.000 women have been raped, watch ”Field of hope”. The war will continue as long as armed groups can finance their warfare by selling minerals.

If you ask the phone companies where their suppliers get minerals from, none of them can guarantee that they aren’t buying conflict minerals from the Congo

Don’t you think that Technology companies should be honest with us about the origin of the metals in our products, I don’t think you will buy a phone if you knew that, the material used in that phone, that you are holding in your hands, had  something to do with a young girl getting raped and her family getting killed.

Hello Afroscandic. This is a really interesting topic, especially since I was browsing for thoughts on this topic last Thursday. I’m amazed how little the world know about this conflict, I wish the world wasent selfish, it seems like that our happiness in the west is the downfall of others in the Third World

I’ve said this in many years. It’s in movies, documentaries, articles. But people ignore it. I dont think its realistic to never buy phones, but there are ways to take responsibility for this. I have only had secondhand phones for at least 3-4 years, so I wont support the production of phones too much. Yes I use it and in that way I add to the culture of using phones and thereby the production. So NO im not an angel! Just wanna inspire you to be aware
